After you’ve registered for courses there are a few additional steps that will need to be completed prior to the first day of the semester: pay tuition bill and/or set-up a payment plan, complete the Online Course Preparation Tutorial in EduCat (required once before your first semester), and order your textbooks.
Textbook Payment Options
You can elect to purchase your texts from any vendor. However, textbooks purchased at NMU’s Bookstore can be sold back at the end of the semester if the texts are being used the following semester. The NMU Bookstore also allows you to charge textbooks to you NMU student account. Rules for charging textbooks to your student account are:
- Include your NMU IN # when ordering your books
- No cash refunds
- Student must pay within 30 days (or set up a payment plan)
- Registered students must be in good financial standing
- $500 limit per semester
Finding Course Materials
If you use your MyNMU account to order with the NMU Bookstore, your schedule will automatically populate on the NMU Bookstore website. If you don’t go through MyNMU, the following are step-by-step instructions on how to find your course materials through the NMU Bookstore’s website. When searching it’s helpful to have your class schedule available to reference the term, department, course, and section number for each course. Below is a sample course schedule for EC 202, LDR 220, and LDR 300:
To find all the books needed, enter each course individually into the course materials search. Here is an example of the information from the sample schedule above. To confirm and search, click the “FIND MATERIALS FOR COURSES” button at the bottom of the page.
Required Textbooks
Results of your search will vary by course. First, let’s focus on the required textbooks. Using the same sample schedule, we’ve highlighted where to check if a material is “required”. You will also see some other options for some courses. “Bookstore Recommended” means the textbook might be helpful for your course but is not required. “Wait for Class” means the professor wants to discuss the material with you in class before you purchase the item.
For each textbook, you can see the different prices for renting or buying new or used textbooks. This is also where you can select whether you would like a physical copy or digital copy if applicable:
Select whichever format you’d like for each textbook and select “add to cart” at the bottom of each textbook’s section. Once you have added your textbooks to your cart you can select “Proceed To Cart” on the bottom of the page.
You should be redirected to your shopping cart to review your order. Be sure to double-check the department, course, and section number for each course to be sure you have the right books in your cart. If you are purchasing printed items be sure to select “Ship to Address”:
Once you’ve confirmed that you have the right books in your cart for your registered classes you can proceed to checkout.
Applying Financial Aid To Pay for Course Materials
If you would like to charge textbooks to your student account, you can do so up to $600 per semester. After reviewing your cart you can select proceed to checkout. You will need to create an account or sign in if you already have an account. If you are signed in and used your NMU email to create your account you should see “Financial Aid” as a payment option once you reach the payment step of checkout. You will then be able to check the “Internal Provider” box and enter your student IN:
If this option is not appearing for you please contact the NMU Bookstore at (906) 227-2480.
Course Materials Selection Pending
Let’s go back our original search results and let’s look at what it would look like if your search for course materials doesn’t yield any results for a class.
When you see “Course Materials Pending Selection”, this means that the course either doesn’t have a required text or the professor has yet to put their book order in with the bookstore. We suggest reaching out to the professor for any course where the text selection is “pending”. You can also notify us in the Global Campus and we can help you identify a textbook or confirm no order is needed.
Order Early
Whether you order through the NMU Bookstore or another vendor, we encourage students to order their course materials as early as possible to ensure they have their books for the first day of class. It is important to note that the bookstore will not begin to process orders until about four weeks before the start of the semester. If you have any issues with your order or finding a textbook, please contact your adviser, and they can help you through the process.
