Whether you’re heading into your final semester or just beginning to plan ahead, graduation is the shared goal. Below are answers to common questions students have as they prepare for graduation.
How do I register for graduation?
If you plan to graduate at the end of the semester (certificate, associate, bachelor’s, or master’s), you must register for graduation so a final degree audit can be completed to confirm eligibility.
You will register for graduation the same way you register for a class. In the course search, look for the graduation option and select the appropriate section. See the example below for guidance on where to find it in the NMU course search:

Fall and winter semesters offer two graduation sections: one for students who plan to participate in the ceremony and one for students who do not. Be sure to select the section that matches your plans.
The deadline to register for graduation is the first Thursday of the semester at 5:00 pm. A $40 graduation fee is assessed at the time of registration.
What if I miss the deadline?
Students who miss the deadline may still apply for graduation by submitting a Request to Add Graduation form. Once the form is received by the Registrar’s Office, a final degree audit will be completed to determine eligibility.
If the student qualifies, the Registrar’s Office will register them for graduation. Your academic adviser can assist with this process if you have questions.
What do I need for the ceremony?
Global Campus students are invited to participate in the full on-campus commencement ceremony alongside their fellow graduates. NMU also hosts a Global Campus Graduation Celebration the evening before Commencement, bringing together students, families, faculty, and staff to recognize graduates. Check with your adviser for details about this year’s event.
Students who plan to attend the ceremony will need a cap and gown. Approved commencement attire includes the official NMU cap, gown, and tassel. These items are available for purchase at the NMU Bookstore through the Saturday of Commencement or online for students who are out of the area. Additional information can be found on the NMU commencement website.
Students who choose not to attend the ceremony may give permission for their name to be displayed on a scrolling screen during the event and can watch the ceremony via live stream.
Can my family attend the ceremony?
Guest seating in the Superior Dome bleachers is unlimited and open to the public. Children are welcome to attend.
If members of your party may have difficulty sitting in bleachers, it’s recommended that someone arrive early to reserve seating. The Superior Dome opens at 9:30 am, and the ceremony begins at 10:00 am.
If you plan to stay in a hotel, reservations should be made as early as possible. While Marquette may seem like a quiet town, hotels often fill quickly during Commencement weekend.
We recommend regularly reviewing your Curriculum, Advising, and Program Planning (CAPP) degree evaluation as you approach your final semesters. Early planning can help prevent delays. If you have additional questions, your academic adviser is a helpful resource as you prepare for graduation.
