Final exams aren’t just any test. They are the culmination of a semester’s learning and usually a significant percentage of your overall grade. Whether you’re looking to improve your grade or keep a 4.0, we put together some study tips that will help you as you prepare for exam week.
1. Make a Plan
Check EduCat for announcements about final exams and confirm all due dates. Use a daily planner or the calendar on your phone to make a plan. Block off study time for each course – giving yourself more time for your most difficult subjects.
2. Start Early
It takes time to go through a semester’s worth of notes and assignments. Outline your notes and create a study guide with things you know for sure will be on the exam. Get creative with flashcards, come up with mnemonic devices, and quiz yourself to test your knowledge.
3. Do Not Disturb
Minimize distractions when it is study time. If you can, turn your phone off. If that’s not an option, mute notifications from texts, social media, and email. Tell your family (or roommates) your plan so they know to give you space and quiet time.
4. Take a Break
Most of us have “crammed” for a test, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best study strategy. We recommend that students study in one to two hour blocks and take short breaks. You may have lots of studying to do, but it will be more effective if you’re sharp when you’re doing it.
5. Ask for Help
If you’re having trouble with a concept, ask for help early. Don’t wait until the night before the exam to email your professor. Set an appointment or utilize posted office hours. If you think you’d benefit from a tutor, take advantage of TutorMe (available via the Global Campus Student Union in EduCat).
Those five study tips should set you up to be successful during exam week. Beyond studying, make sure to fuel your brain with healthy snacks, get a good night’s sleep, and do something that naturally energizes you prior to the exam. You’ve got this!
